Rothbury bowlers held their open pairs competition on Bank Holiday Monday, with a full compliment of 32 entries from throughout Northumberland.

In what was a good day’s bowling, it came down to two closely-fought semi-finals.

In the first, A Birrel/F Mcleod (s), of Hebburn BC, beat their fellow club members M Johnson/W Fuller (s) by the margin of 6-3.

In the second, the hopes of the host club were resting on the shoulders of A Robson/B Butters (s), who went into the last end against M Appleby/R Lothian (s) of Alcan BC with a one-shot lead.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, with the home pair dropping two shots.

In the final, which was another close contest, the pairing of Appleby/Lothian ran out winners by six shots to five.

The committee thanked the organiser Norman Martin and the ladies for their sterling efforts, without whom these events could not take place.
