ALNWICK Cricket Club U15s began their league fixtures in encouraging fashion as they went down to a narrow defeat at Tynemouth CC in their first match and then overcame Kirkley in the second.
Against Tynemouth, they scored 113-7 in 20 overs thanks mainly to a brilliant 53 from captain Tom Lakey, scored from only 10 overs. He was well supported by a quality 17 from county under 12 player Max Harrison.
In reply, Alnwick pushed Tynemouth all the way but the hosts reached their required runs with two overs to spare for the loss of four wickets. Pick of the bowlers was spinner Tom Woodburn, 1-10.
At Kirkley, Alnwick batted first and were bowled out for 79 in 18 overs on a rain-affected wicket. The innings was held together by county Under 13 player Sam Mavin who scored 27. Tom Lakey 2-15, Nick Goulden 1-10, Andrew Wright 2-17 and Sam Mavin 3-13 skittled out the Kirkley batsmen.
They were backed up by some terrific fielding, in particular from Ollie Scott who just would not be beaten.
A fine team effort from Alnwick who can build on a good start to the season.
