Last weekend saw the eighth, and final, event of the North East Windsurfers (NEWS) series.
Hosted by Derwent Reservoir, the racing drew a good number of competitors, including several from Coquet Windsurfing Club, and as ever, the standard of racing was high.
And it proved to be a good weekend for the local competitors, with Tom Dryden taking the overall series title, pushing clubmate Pip Heywood into second place.
It was a close call for the championship....Dryden and Heywood, both had three firsts as their best event results, they also both had equal number of race firsts throughout the season.
It went down to best results on the final weekend, and that meant Dryden was presented with the trophy.
Results for the series were as follows:
1st Tom Dryden, 2nd (and 1st Junior) Pip Heywood, 3rd Gus Takiguchi , 4th (and 1st Veteran) Dave Dobson, 5th (and 1st Lady) Ali Claydon, 6th (and 2nd Veteran) Bruce Scott, 7th (and 3rd Veteran) Susan Benbow.
Throughout the weekend winds were light and shifty making for interesting racing and testing the racers’ strategic abilities.
There were exciting moments with a photo finish confirming the second and third places in the first race; then all eyes were on Dryden and Haywood in the second race whilst Liath Campbell swept down on a different tack and, unchallenged, crossed the finish line in style: the third race, won by Dryden with ease, had only inches to spare between second and third.
Results for the weekend were as follows:
1st Techno Adam Raistrick; 1st Clubclass Neil Raistrick; 1st Youth Leo Takiguchi ; 1st Master Ali Claydon ; 1st Veteran Dave Dobson; Ist Lady & 3rd overall Laith Campbell ; 1st Junior & 2nd overall Pip Heywood ; 1st overall Tom Dryden.
