Cricketer Lennon is hat-trick hero

Step forward and take a bow Lennon Harmison, a 10 year old pupil at Bothal Primary Schoo,l who on Sunday achieved his first ever hat-trick ably assisted by two of his cousins, Charlie Harmison and Ava Harmison-Broady.

The trio were playing for Ashington under 13’s in a cup competition against Tynemouth at Preston Avenue when Lennon – son of James and Michelle – took the first wicket when the batsman was caught by Charlie Harmison – son of Steve and Hayley.

A beautiful delivery from right arm off spinner Lennon bowled the next batsman middle stump then when Ava – daughter of Joanne and David – pouched a skier, a post match photograph for the family album was duly arranged after Ashington’s victory.

“Lennon was chuffed to bits and over the moon,” said father James, who witnessed the action from close quarters as he was umpiring in the contest.

“All of their team mates piled on top of both Lennon and Ava after the hat trick had been completed. It was an unforgettable moment for Lennon – and also a touching one for my wife Michelle, who was watching and myself.

"Charlie’s mam and dad were also there and although Ava was away for the weekend with her parents, her dad David made the trip up north to Tynemouth to bring her to the match – then they went back to finish their mini break!”

He continued: “Lennon was bowling from my end and I was very happy for him. He was running around and had a smile on his face.

"He started playing two years ago and he’s never away from the cricket field at Ashington practising all of the time.

"I reckon he will continue his cricketing journey if he keeps progressing - and at the moment he’s enjoying it and doing fantastically well.”

Lennon was called up for Northumberland under 11’s last week only for the game to be rained off but he is in the squad of 12 for a 35 overs away game against Cumbria on Wednesday.
