A special competition to honour a north Northumberland golf legend who is battling a debilitating illness is being held later this month.

Alnwick Castle Golf Club is hosting the Peter Deeble 36-hole Scratch Open on Saturday, September 29 – and there are still places available.

The contest is a ‘tribute’ to Peter, whose glittering amateur career was cut short after contracting a form of motor neurone disease.

It will form part of the North East Audi Masters Series and as well as the Championship Trophy, £650-worth of prizes will be on offer for the first four placed golfers

Neil Foggon, club manager at Alnwick Castle Golf Club, said: “The Scratch Open is a small tribute to the great career Peter enjoyed.

“Peter unfortunately has a form of motor neurone disease so has not played golf for a number of years.

“I played golf with and against Peter and was usually on the losing side when playing against him.

“He is a very unassuming man with a fantastic sporting attitude, which belied a steely and determined character.

“I have always admired Peter as a golfer and a person and have wanted to run a competition to honour his success as a golfer.

“This is a small celebration to this somewhat forgotten hero of Northumberland golf.”

Peter, who lives in Alnwick, was one of the most gifted amateur golfers in Britain in the 1970s and early 80s, when his rivals and international team-mates included the likes of Nick Faldo.

Talented Peter represented England more than 60 times and played in two Walker Cups for Great Britain and Ireland.

He also won two English Amateur Championships, the Lytham Trophy – where he held off competition from both Sandy Lyle and Charlie Green – and countless other titles.

Peter was capped more than 100 times for Northumberland county.

He also played for both Alnwick and Alnmouth (Foxton) golf clubs during his time in the sport.

Entry to the Scratch Open competition is £25 per person, which includes a light lunch, and must be made in advance.
