COACH OF THE YEAR

WINNER: Sue Skirrow – Athletics

DELIGHTED Sue paid tribute to the talented athletes who she takes under her wing after winning Coach of the Year for the second time in a row.

Sue, from Lesbury, coaches a wide range of disciplines, from sprinting and hurdling to jumping and throwing.

She regularly takes junior athletes to Monkton Stadium so they can experience the track there and benefit from coaching by Olympic development coach Matt Wood.

As a result of her 2010 efforts, a total of five gold, six silver and two bronze medals were won by her U13 and U15 athletes in indoor and outdoor competitions in the North East.

She also helped one veteran increase his high jump by 15cm to win silver in the North East Championships.

Sue, 40, said: “It was a really successful year in terms of the juniors.”

She added that she did not expect to win the award, but admitted winning it two years on the bounce made the achievement ‘extra special’.
