A new academy has been created at Percy Wood Golf Club, as it aims to become one of the top golfing destinations in the North East.

The teaching facility has been set up after PGA Professional David O’Brien joined the club.

He brings with him more than 10 years’ experience of first-class coaching.

Simon Olver, complex manager at Percy Wood Golf and Country Retreat, is delighted to have David on the books.

He said: “David has a professional attitude towards the game and brings a wealth of new ideas and techniques which will ensure that the David O’Brien Golf Academy becomes one of the North East’s top teaching facilities.

“This will have a huge impact on golf in the local area, helping people of all ages get into the game of golf or improve their skills. We understand the importance of making this facility available to all, we will be running several free and subsidised sessions throughout the year. These are exciting times.”

David began playing golf at the age of 16, but showed immediate aptitude for the game and rapidly achieved a low single-figure handicap with help from his local PGA professional.

After leaving school, he focussed all his attention on golf and competed in a number of local and national amateur tournaments.

Following this, he became attached to Burgham Park Golf Club and enrolled with the Professional Golfers Association to train to become a PGA Professional.

In 2006, he graduated with a foundation degree in professional golf.

This training sparked his passion for coaching.

The acquisition of David coincides with major investment in the course.

Further drainage work has been carried out over the winter months, with most of the focus on the fourth hole.

There is also a new enlarged teeing area, a totally redesigned green complex, numerous new, well-placed bunkers and a pond.

The competition tee has been brought forward 60 yards to 275 yards which will give the big hitters the option to take on the green.

There has been further improvement to the driving range facilities and the construction of a new website, www.percy
