Champions slip to shock home defeat

WARENFORD began their defence of the Johnnie Johnson Housing Alnwick and District League championship with a surprise home defeat to Mitford who clinched victory by nine wickets in the penultimate over of an enthralling fixture.

The visitors owed their success to a magnificent opening partnership of 204 between Mark Parrish (123 not out) and Mathew Ellinor (77) after being set a target of 229 from 45 overs.

Both openers were dropped a couple of times and made the home side pay dearly.

Brian Thompson top-scored for Warenford with 97, being caught behind after an otherwise chanceless innings. Tony Potts had a number of ‘lives’ in an innings of 55.

Alnmouth and Lesbury Seconds opened their programme with a 47-run victory away to Howick with valuable contributions from Lee Pearson (64) and Luke Napier (four for 36).

Other winners on an entertaining opening day were Tillside, who beat Rock by 51 runs, and Wooler, who defeated Warkworth by three wickets.

Sadly, Embleton were unable to fulfil their fixture at Berwick and duly conceded the points.
