Cowgate (134 all out) v Alnwick (162 all out)
Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League, Division A2
ALNWICK continued their improved form in defeating bottom club Cowgate by 29 runs.
Michael Brewis continued his run of good form with a very good 62 aided by Andrew Scott.
A quickfire 16 from Andrew Armin brought Alnwick back into the game after losing two early wickets.
After the departure of Brewis, it was left to the experienced Wright and O’Hara to post a competitive score.
Opening bowler Amjad Ali captured the first six wickets as his medium-paced bowling on a soft wicket proved difficult for the visiting batsmen.
In reply, the early Cowgate batsmen also found batting difficult against O’Hara and Graham and this pair had Cowgate in trouble at 22 for 5.
Cameo innings by Chadha, Choudry and an aggressive innings by Crawford gave the home side some hope but Weaver and Wright mopped up the tail, giving Alnwick maximum points and moving them into a mid-table position.
Cowgate won the toss and elected to field leaving Alnwick to make the best of a very soft wicket in which the bowlers held the upper hand.
Amjad Ali had early success when he had Green caught at the wicket and then bowled Matthewson.
Armin joined Brewis and this pair added 32 in 20 minutes, with Armin in aggressive form.
On his dismissal Scott and Brewis then put together a stand of 72 which was largely responsible for victory.
When Scott was out quickly followed by Woods, Graham and then Brewis with the total on 129, it could have heralded a mini-collapse, however, Wright with Goulden and O’Hara ensured this would not happen as they moved the score to 162 before losing the final wicket.
Cowgate found, as Alnwick had done earlier, batting was not to be easy on the soft wicket against some good bowling by O’Hara and Graham and were quickly in trouble, losing the top five batsmen for a paltry 22.
Gubta and Chadha made a small recovery but with the score on 68 Chadha was caught for 31 and, without any addition, Gubta was brilliantly run out by Rob Woods, hitting the wicket direct at the bowler’s end. Crawford then took on the bowlers, hitting 30 which included four sixes before being well caught by Woods.
Bokhari was trapped leg before by Wright and the same bowler completed the victory by bowling Choudry, leaving Alnwick victors.
