A Warkworth sportsman who plays a fast and furious full-contact game is heading to New York for a prestigious tournament which will pit him against the best in the world.
And Aaron Oliver has made an appeal for sponsorship to help him fulfil ambitions of battling it out State side in the men’s roller derby tournament.
The 25-year-old, known as Blockbeard, is one of only 14 skaters to be selected to represent Tyne and Fear at the Mohawk Valley Cup in August.
The Newcastle-based side is ranked third in Europe and 13th across the globe.
The summer tournament will pit the North-East outfit against the top men’s sides around, including the New York Shock Exchange.
Father-of-one Aaron, who was introduced to the sport by his girlfriend Kerri James, said: “It’s such an honour to be playing in the tournament at a world-class level, but now the hard work really begins to make sure we’re ready for it.
“That includes trying to raise funds to get over to America.
“It’ll be an expensive trip with flights, accommodation and food.
“With it being a DIY sport, we do everything ourselves and the team and individuals are looking for sponsorship opportunities.
“If anybody is interested in helping us get over to the USA, we’d love to talk to them.”
Roller derby is a full-contact sport played on roller skates, on an oval track.
