Back to winning ways

Alnwick II (179-6) v Cowgate II (120 all out)

Alnwick IIs returned to winning ways on Saturday with a comfortable 59-run home win over Cowgate.

A much-improved all-round display from the hosts saw them post a respectable total in the first innings having been in the mire at 15-3, while a controlled fielding display restricted the visitors to just 120.

Alnwick decided to bat first, but were soon in real trouble as Allen Thompson, Robbie Green, and Chris Woods all fell inside the opening eight overs.

Andrew Stewart immediately set out his stall to play an invaluable captain’s knock, while Michael Bateman restricted his attacking impulses and added 28 with his captain before being bowled for 10. Stewart finished on 70, as Alnwick posted 179-6.

Gilchrist looked to bat through for the visitors, but Green, after a wayward start, lured him to find the safe hands of Thompson at mid-on.

Eshan cleared the boundary with ease on a number of occasions in a run-a-ball cameo of 23, but Woods knocked back his off stump for his second wicket.

The introduction of spin immediately went the distance as Stewart’s first delivery was launched into the caravan park by the swashbuckling Chadha, but the Alnwick skipper soon had his revenge, dismissing the talisman lbw for 33.

Wickets then fell at regular intervals and the evergreen Thompson claimed three more catches.
