In his very first appearance for England, local athlete Carl Avery performed well to finish second in a Home International event at the weekend.

Avery, who comes from Seahouses, runs for Morpeth Harriers, and at Nottingham’s Wollaton Park on Saturday he finished 40 seconds behind race winner, Adam Hickey of Southend.

The pair’s one-two helped England to a superb country team triumph in the Home Countries International.

Barrow and Furness athlete Peter Huck completed the England scoring trio, when he finished fourth.

In the Senior Women’s event, Morpeth’s Emma Holt finished 11th, and was second counter for a third placed North of England squad, who were led home by sixth placed Natasha Hatswell of Rotherham.
