McDonald Cup: In my time as playing and reporting on golf at Alnwick Golf Club, I have never known a result quite like last week’s McDonald Cup. The dreaded, by some, bogie format in which you play against the par of the course was a walk in the park for Chris Jobson, whose scorecard recorded six birdies, 11 pars, and a single bogie giving him an incredible 9up score and inevitably first place. Chris’ gross score of 65 was, I believe, equal to the new 18-hole course record set some 13 years ago. Not quite so impressive but equally amazing was the 6up scored by 2015 vice-captain and resident greenkeeper Billy Brown. Third with a score of a mere 3up was Joe Henderson. Six twos were recorded, two of them byJoe Henderson and one each by Colin Donaldson, Alan Black, Martin Quince and last but not least Ian Tate. Of the 48 players who entered the competition, no less than 12 players returned scores bettering or equaling their handicap, a testament not only to the hugely-improved weather conditions last weekend but also to the hard work by Stuart and his greens staff turning out the course in fine condition. For anyone wishing to see it for themselves, there is an open pairs better-ball competition on Saturday, June 6, with fantastic prizes including hole-in-one prizes as follows: Second hole – a set of Taylor-made Rocketballz HP Irons and a White Smoke Putter. Fourth hole – a two-night stay for four at the Marriot Forrest of Arden, including dinner, bed-and-breakfast and two rounds of golf. 15th hole – three night, four-day holiday for two at the Marriott Praia del Rey, Portugal including flights, car hire, dinner, bed-and-breakfast and golf. 17th hole – £5,000 cash. Even if you don’t manage a hole-in-one, there is £450 in cash prizes up for grabs. To book a tee time, go to or telephone the clubhouse on 01665 602632.

Slater Cup: On a Saturday – that at last, gave an idea that spring may not totally have passed us by – The Slater Cup was the goal. New member Simon Williams did not take long getting into the winner’s circle. After putting in his three cards earlier this month for an initial handicap of 11 he recorded a nett 68 to see his handicap reduce by one.

Results: 1 S Williams 79-11=68 (back nine); 2 T Garton 77-9=68 (back nine); 3 L Baxter 88-20=68. Tony Garton and Gary Scott shared the 2s club and Ken Bailey took the nearest the pin at the sixth prize.

RI Scott Trophy (Juniors): On Sunday, the juniors took centre stage. The RI Scott Trophy turned into a family affair, with brothers Freddie and Oliver Bremner both finishing with nett 68. With their score also equal on the back nine, it came down to the back six and, here, Freddie’s superb three on the 245-yard stroke one 15th saw him take the cup. Results: 1 F Bremner 68 (back six); 2 O Bremner 68; 3 D Cook 72. A reminder to all juniors that coaching starts at 6pm on Monday, June 1. Meet at the clubhouse, balls and clubs provided if needed. Contact junior organiser Roy Wilson or George Bremner for more information.
