Winter League: With only three weeks to go, things are really hotting up in the winter competitions at Alnwick. Week 16 was played over the shortened 14-hole course with two winter greens also in place for course protection. After scooping the whole of the twos pot last time, this time it was the sweep money for first position for Ray Baston, whose score of 31pts saw off the other 39 contenders on a bright sunny but frosty morning over the Swansfield course, making it a one, two, three for the senior section. At the top of the leaderboard on the day were Gordon Johnstone and Rod Henderson, who were second and third on 30pts and separated only on countback. There being no twos in week 16, it is a roll over and potential big win for someone this coming Sunday. Carl Green’s lead remains the same at the top of the Winter League overall standings with Kenny Darlow and Jimmy Cookson and others still in hot pursuit. The Zecca nett accumulator is a much closer one to call with Brian McFall out in front on 187, but with no less than six players all within striking distance and all within four points of the lead, namely Messrs Murphy, Green, Donaldson, Lewis, Pentleton and Black. The Zecca Nett Eclectic shows Carl Green still out in front on 61pts, Andrew Dodd on 57, and Ray Holding and Brian McFall both on 56. In the gross equivalent, it could be a blanket finish with Colin Donaldson, Wayne Belisle and Guy Ridley on 59, all in search of that elusive birdie or eagle which could clinch the title.
Winter League, Week 16: 1 Ray Baston 31pts; 2 G Johnstone 30; 3 R Henderson 30. For information for those members who don’t play in the winter league, please note the 2015 knockout sheets and initial summer competition entry sheets are now on the noticeboard in the clubhouse.
Arizona Shuffle: Members played an Arizona Shuffle, a team competition in which three team members’ score counts on par-three holes, two count on par-four holes and just one on par-five holes. Team Cunningham kept up their recent good form to record another win.
Results: 1 Team Cunningham 92pts (back nine); 2 Team Lamb 92; 3 Team Baxter 89 (back nine). The twos club was shared nine ways – so not much each.
