Memorial Cup: In somewhat late summery weather with little or no breeze and the course still in good late season condition it was proven that the Swansfield track is as good a test of golfing skills as most in the area with only nine out of the 57 competitors equalling or bettering the competition scratch score of 36pts. In a sudden burst of late season form Ian Tate returned 39pts to lift the Tom Jamieson Memorial Cup. Second third and fourth places could only be decided on countback with all three carding 38pts. Micky Bell took second with a magnificent two over par gross, back nine, from Ian Hogg in third. Making up the trio of 38 pointers was Brian Hunt who was placed fourth. Seven two’s were holed so a moderate payout for Ken Burn, Stu Harrop, Ian Tate, Ian Bell, Marc Friar, Ian Hogg and Kevin Murphy. There are no changes in the eclectic tables with both the gross and net contenders seemingly all at maximum, and with only four counting comps to be played I await to be proved wrong that the order will change from the current line up of Andrew Dodd 61pts, Alan Dodd 59pts and Carl Green and David Fachie 58, in the net and in the gross Dan Harrison 54, Barry Farrar 56, and Andrew Tate on 57.
Easyway Order of Merit: The Easyway Order of Merit, however, is still theoretically wide open, the current standings reveal Sam Thompson leading on 1316, followed by Michael Friar 1286, Marc Friar 1253 and Dan Harrison 1233 and anything can happen in this one, watch this space.

Sun Cup: First up is a confirmed result from last week which saw Jim Allison win the Sun Cup and get the other two club. This week the Maurice Gaskin Memorial Trophy was on the table and on a blustery day it was Neil Brown and Matty Graham sitting in the clubhouse tied on nett 67 as the evening gloom and rain came down with one group to finish. Alas for the duo that group contained Michael Hindhaugh who posted his best ever score at the Links, a gross 71, nett 62, to win by five shots. This gave him gross, nett and a two club prize and a cut to his handicap as well as an excuse to bark at the moon. In joint third were Ian Gray and Stephen Glass with nett 69s, however, Ian had some consolation as him and brother Paul won the doubles knockout the following day in a tense final against Michael Moyle and William Laidlaw. The match went to the 19th hole where the Gray twins triumphed against the stroke. Well done and Guinness all round for the lads.
Scores: M Hindhaugh 71-9=62; N Brown 82-15=67; M Graham 73-6=67 (back nine). Notes for this week as the prestigious Seniors Open takes place this Thursday followed by the Calcutta Cup singles knockout final on the same afternoon so the Links will be looking their finest.
