Jackie Milburn Cap: Gary Hornsby, who recently recorded back-to-back wins in the Club Championship, followed up with another success, this time for the Jackie Milburn Cap. On a day of exceptional low scoring, he posted 65-3-62, six under the day’s competition scratch score, to win by one shot from three runnners-up.

Leading returns: G Hornsby 65-3-62; Stephen Swan 72-9-63; Kevin Stansfield 75-12-63; Harry Beckingham 77-14-63; David Hornsby 71-6-65; Tom Sellers 74-9-65.

Medal: The Day Shavou-sponsored Medal was played for at the Links last weekend with nearly all the field playing early in order to beat Hurricane Bertha, who was due to pop in after lunch. And it was curious George Bremner who kept his game together to post a match-winning 40 points around the pristine greensward. In second was the old southpaw Mick Tweddell with a good knock of 37, which was better on the back nine than Ian Donkin’s 37. A further two shots back was a clutch of golfers whose score was respectable in the strong winds. No twos this week so another roll over to the Club Championship this Saturday and it won’t take a simple mind to realise it will be a substantial sum for the small select field if they can pot one.

Scores: G Bremner 40pts; M Tweddell 37; I Donkin 37 (back nine). The sightings of the rare Killie black rabbit have increased with further evidence now seen around the seventh green and the second fairway.

Margaret Gair Salver: 1 Kathleen Dalby 33pts (on the back nine); 2 Jean Hardy 33; 3 Joan Gray 32.
