JN Thompson Putter competition: A nail biting finish to the JN Thompson Putter competition at Alnwick last week with the five players being separated by a mere three shots. Storming home for yet another brilliant performance was club junior Andrew Dodd whose 41pts was just enough to squeeze out the elder member of the Tate playing golf family, Ian, into second place. In third came Jon Gaines with 39pts. There were five members of the twos club namely, Barry Farrar, Jon Gaines, Peter Lee, Alan Black and David Robinson and with a field of 60 players they can expect a moderate payout.

The Easyway Order of Merit: Is headed by Eric Johnson on 533 followed by Michael Friar 480, Albert Straughan 463 and Bob Shepherd on 453. I will update the Eclectic current leaderboards in this column next week.

Lifeboat Trophy: There was definitely no man overboard at the Old Links, as Freddie’s dad won the Lifeboat Trophy by a whopping four points. George Bremner was in fine form and his 42 points kept a four man huddle a good cable length back. The group of Stephen Glass, Nev Holden, Bob Thompson and Matty Graham all shot 38pts, not a bad effort in the stiff southerly and with the punishing rough. Indeed the wind was that strong it appears to have blown some wood away from the collapsed bridge at Killie as well as the tee box bins at most holes. There were only a brace of 2s so Nev Holden and Gary Scott shared the pot.

Scores: G Bremner 42pts; S Glass 38; N Holden 38; R Thompson 38; M Graham 38 (back nines). Captain Jock requests all outstanding accounts for the outing to Ryton Brewery and Golf Course to be settled before departure. Monies can be left behind the bar.

Slater Cup: This prestigious major prize was a keenly contested affair as the horrendous conditions took their toll on the field. A four-way tie was only decided on countback with young Michael Straker edging it thanks to his staying power. He beat off determined challenges from Graham Sawley, the returning mark shone and Kev Jamieson as level par 70 proved to be the winning score. Next on the list was G Gorman whose new sat-nav helped him to a net 71. There were seven twos with Davie fish grabbing a brace in conditions well suited to marine life.

Scores: M Straker 86-16=70; RG Sawley 83-13+70; M Shone 79-9-70; K Jamieson 83-13+70. All on countback.

Juniors – Ivan Scott Trophy: Kyle Brown broke his trophy drought by scooping the Ivan Scott Trophy in bright windy conditions last Sunday. His nett 63 was nine ahead of Daniel Cooke’s 72 with Freddie Bremner edging out his brother Oliver by a shot with his 76. A five effort form all the field on a course playing above its par due to the rough.

Rodgett Trophy/Medal: 1 R Hopkinson 99-26-73; 2 L Wraith 98-24-74; 3 K Dalby 98-22-76.

The Glendale Cup: Was held on Saturday and the easy winner was Vince Bissett 80-12-68 ahead of John Ewing 92-18-74. On Sunday, Gents Invitation Day avoided all the rain and the winning team were G Brown, B Garland and M Colven on 71pts just ahead of K Robinson, J Kerrigan and P Friel on 69. Bank Holiday Monday was the Gallon Memorial Rosebowl and the winners here were Geoff Brown and Susan Brown with 37, beating Judith Brown and Paul Routledge on a better back nine.

Results: Percy Wood 1 Wooler 4; Bamburgh 4 Alnmouth Village 1; Rothbury 4 Seahouses 1;Wooler 3 Goswick 2. Bamburgh currently lead with 10pts (played three), Wooler 7; Goswick 6pts (both played two).
