Men’s Easter Nine-hole Sweep (Sunday): With another very good turnout, it was deja-vu, as Viv Wilkinson shot another gross 37, three strokes over par, playing off a 16 (eight) handicap. He had been docked a shot after the same score last week, therefore his Stapleford total was only 23pts.

Leading places: 1 Viv Wilkinson 23pts; Joint 2 Bob Boyle and Michael Conroy 21; 4 Bob Hill 20; Joint 5 Davey Trotter, Neville Holden and Richie Campbell 19.

Cumulative League placings: (The four best scores to count) 1 Richie Campbell 83pts; 2 Neville Holden 79; Joint 3 David Inkster and Russell Archibald 76; Joint 5 Steve Foreman and Chris Fettis 75. However, with another three weeks left to play there is still time for more good scores to affect these placings.

Seniors’ Easter Nine-hole Sweep on Thursday, February 28: With the best round we’ve seen all winter by a Senior, this week’s winner was David ‘Lefty’ Gleadall 24pts; Joint 2 Bill Bissett and Chris Fettis 19; 4 John Clarke 18.

Leading Cumulative League scores: 1 David Gleadall 74pts; 2 Peter Egdell 71; 3 Bob Boyle 70; Joint 4 Bob Stephenson and Jack Ross 69; Joint 6 Mike Sargeant and Chris Fettis 67.

With the first Friendly of the season against Goswick GC Seniors on March 7, the final two weeks/rounds of the Easter Sweep will be played on Thursdays, March 14 and 21.

The current good condition of the course could be one reason why we are seeing such impressive scores over the past few weeks. If your own club is still struggling with mud and high water-tables then why not come along and see for yourself. Visitors are always very welcome down at The Village, the oldest nine-hole links course in England.

Winter League: With only two weeks left of the Winter League, Steve Miller, on only his second outing this season, headed the 51-strong field and grabbed all 16 order of merit points for first place with his 41 stableford points score. In second place, beaten only on countback was Tom Gregson also with 41.In third and the only man making a significant move in the order of merit standings, was Brian McFall whose 40pts and third place moved him up from 12th to fifth on the overall leaderboard. It is still mathematically possible for any one of 34 players to win the overall title.

Once again, the course was presented in fine condition by head greenkeeper Alan, his greens staff and many of the players back in the clubhouse were commenting how particularly good the greens were so early in the year and, with one-third of the field posting net scores equalling or bettering par, Barron’s Axe swung into action to cut handicaps accordingly. Only two twos were recorded, giving Bob Shepherd and Jimmy Cookson a nice little bonus payout, and Stat of the Week this week was Eddy Jury’s 12pts total on the par threes.

The bacon sarnie challenge: Was won on countback by Colin Donaldson, Gordon Johnstone and Ian Bell with a combined points total of 109. Sharing the same score was the three-ball of Geordie Brown, Richie Robson and Alan Black but Colin’s better individual score of 39pts secured his team’s breakfast next week.
