JUNIOR windsurfers from an Amble-based team will be competing against the north’s finest on Sunday.

The Coquet Crushers line up alongside teams from Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and the North East for the final time in this year’s RYA North Zone Team15 Championship.

Other North Zone teams taking part include: Devils (Durham); Ellerton Scouts (Richmond, Yorkshire); North Lincs Invaders (Barton on Humber); Pugney’s Pirates (Wakefield); and Rother Valley Country Park (Sheffield).

The 2011 North Zone competition is tighter at the top than in previous years, with Pugneys Pirates from Wakefield giving last year’s winners, the North Lincs Invaders, a tough time.

So there is everything to play for in the final round.

Pugneys have the home advantage too, as the final round of this year’s competition is on their home waters at Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield.

The eventual winning team at the end of the summer will compete against all the other RYA Zone winners in the national final for the Team15 Champions Cup.

This year is the 10th anniversary of the RYA Team15 initiative which was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass-roots level.

Supported by industry leaders Tushingham/Starboard, Boards magazine and Neil Pryde, fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15.

Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.
