Alnwick slump to sorry defeat

Alnwick (115 all out) v Seaton Burn (170-9)

Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League, Division A2

A POOR team performance with a spate of missed chances in the field and an inability to rotate the strike when batting meant that Alnwick slumped to a disappointing defeat by 55 runs at the hand of perennial strugglers Seaton Burn on Saturday.

Batting first, the visitors scored 170 for nine with Jennison and Kirkwood top-scoring.

While the home team’s bowling was tidy it was not helped by the aforesaid chances that went astray.

Replying Jamie Stanley took the game to Seaton Burn and top-scored with 41.

After his dismissal, the remaining batsmen were unable to keep up the momentum and eventually were all out with more than six overs to spare.

Seaton Burn won the toss and batted first, with Weldon and Jennison opening against the bowling of Guy and Graham.

Weldon was out with the score at 15 when he was lbw to Guy, who had further success when he had Lyall caught at the wicket.

Jennison was joined by Hope and they added 52 before Wright captured Jennison quickly, followed by Hope.

Scott removed Coleman and White and, with the score at 112 for six, the home side were on top.

However, Kirkwood, J Wright and Morrison had other ideas and attacked the bowling, taking the total to 170 for nine in the allotted overs.

While the score was more than expected, Brewis and Stanley set about the task on a perfect wicket and there appeared no reason why the score could not be overhauled.

Brewis was watchful against some fine bowling by Weldon, while Stanley was batting aggressively, scoring well.

The total had reached 46 when Brewis was out and six runs later Stanley departed for an excellent 41.

From then on, batting appeared to be very difficult and the scoring rate dropped but still appeared to be within the capabilities of the home side.

The visitors’ varied bowling allied to some fine fielding held the Alnwick batsmen and panic appeared to set in with the result that wickets were lost needlessly and the innings closed 55 runs short.

Alnwick will have to put together some better performances if the season is not to become a struggle in the lower regions of the league.

Alnwick travel to Consett on Saturday, hopefully with more purpose than they showed in this match.
