Alnwick run in three tries against local rivals Morpeth

Alnwick 17 Morpeth 0

North One East and the Silver Horse Trophy

The Alnwick faithful were rewarded with a cracker of a game on Saturday as their team ran in three tries against rugby neighbours and greatest rivals Morpeth.

This not only gave them four valuable league points but also saw them recover the Silver Horse Trophy.

To make it a clean sweep, Alnwick’s James Hamilton was awarded the David Routledge Cup as the best player in the match.

The deadlock was broken on the quarter-hour when Hamilton picked up from a midfield scrummage and drove forward ten metres before being hauled down. Scrum-half Moralee was on hand to feed Weddle from the ruck and he drew the defence before passing to Gray who eluded what cover defence was left to score wide out. The kick failed (5-0).

In countering one of the visitors’ raids, Alnwick set up the next score. Quick work from a free-kick saw the ball into the hands of Shell, who outpaced the Morpeth defence to race down his line ably supported by Hutcheson who took the inside pass after the Morpeth full back had been drawn out and scored mid-left. Bird added the points (12-0, half-time).

Despite Morpeth pressure for the remainder of the half Alnwick held out with one particularly fine tackle by Gray stopping a Morpeth score

With the wind advantage in the second half, Alnwick applied pressure and it was in this quarter of the game that they sealed the victory. Getting a line-out in the Morpeth 22, Alnwick caught and drove on, working their way infield and forward until at the fifth phase, Moralee was able to break and he fed Warcup who shimmied his way through the Morpeth defence to score on the right. Bird could not add to the score (17-0).

This was a sound team performance by Alnwick with the forwards putting in some hard graft and the half backs Moralee and Warcup making the best of their efforts. It is to be hoped that they can continue in this form when they visit Malton & Norton next week.
