Alnmouth youngsters catch out Pont in cup opener

Alnmouth U13 (125-4) v Ponteland U13 (90 all out)

Alnmouth U13s played their first ECB Cup game of the season on Sunday with a tricky away fixture at Ponteland.

Winning the toss and batting first, Alnmouth’s Olly Tulip and Archie Elder put on an excellent 53 before Tulip retired on 30, Elder was then joined by debutant Ben Kelly and they pushed the score along to 73 before Elder was run out for 29.

Kelly and Nick Robertson batted sensibly, looking for the quick singles and both were eventually dismissed for 17. The Alnmouth innings ended with a flourish as Dan Phillips hit a mighty six as they closed on 125 for 4 from their 20 overs.

County U13 openers Tom Reeman and Ryan Gerrard started the Ponteland innings with great confidence and were going well at 36-0 after only five overs.

However, in the next over Lukas Robinson dismissed Gerrard for 16 when he had him caught by Ben Kelly.

Reeman went on to retire for a classy 32.

After his departure, Tom Harrop, with 2 for 16, and Olly Tulip, with a magnificent four wickets for only two runs in his four overs, ensured the result was never in doubt as Ponteland were bowled out in the final over for 90, leaving Alnmouth victors by 35 runs.

Archie Elder made two good stumpings while Will Stewart and Matisse Richards both held great catches. Alnmouth are home to Ashington in the next round.
