THE Alnmouth Alligators had a narrow victory over the Stocksfield Sharks in the Alnmouth and Lesbury Under 9s cricket festival on Sunday.

Batting first, Alnmouth scored 243 (teams start with 200 and lose six runs every time they are out).

Good early hitting by Thorsten Robinson, Josh Lowes, Ewan Thorpe and George Cockayne got Alnmouth off to a good start but the batsmen were then pegged down by accurate Stocksfield bowling.

It was a similar tale when Stocksfield batted and with three overs to go they required five for victory, but the loss of a wicket and a few well-taken singles resulted in the scores being level with an over to go.

Up stepped Alnmouth fast bowler Harry Sutherland, who proceeded to bowl a wicket-maiden to leave Stocksfield six runs short on 237. The excellent final capped off a great day of junior cricket involving six local teams.

In the semi-finals, Stocksfield had defeated Tillside Tornadoes whilst Alnmouth had won a close match against Alnwick Falcons.

Young Alnwick bowler Mathew Straker had the distinction of taking a hat-trick in their game against Stocksfield.

Alnmouth’s tournament victory was the third successive year they have won their festival.
