This moving painting captures the impact NHS frontline workers are making on the UK

by Hayley O'Keeffe

A stunning Renaissance-style painting which honours the UK's NHS workers has taken social media by storm.

After our Prime Minister Boris Johnson himself was treated in intensive care, and as the numbers of people with Covid-19 increases day by day, the artwork by 20 year old Amber Hunt has really struck a chord with social media users.

Florist Amber, who lives in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, painted the image in acrylics on reinforced paper.

Inspired by Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, which he painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel between 1508 and 1512, in the original painting the hand of God tenderly reaches to touch the hand of Adam. But in the image by Amber the hand of God is replaced by a be-gloved frontline worker, providing a healing touch to mankind.

'They will go down in history'

Amber, who is currently in lockdown with her family, said, "I wanted to show support for the NHS workers that are helping us all at the moment and show them that, like the Renaissance artists they will go down in history.

"I think everyone is having a lot of time to reflect at the moment, and I think that once this is over people won't take things for granted so much, and that's got to be a good thing.

"I'm usually a bit iffy about social media, because there is always so much judgement, but the feedback I have received on this painting has been wonderful, people got what I was trying to say and I think it's a relatable image."
