Great British Chefs has revealed the most popular recipe and ingredient searches on their website in 2020, showcasing the foods that have helped Britain’s home cooks keep busy during lockdown.
The top 10 was dominated by comforting food with sweet treats including Welsh cakes, custard tart, and coffee and walnut cake appearing high on the list, alongside warming dishes such as chicken bhuna, and classics like egg mayo sandwiches and potato dauphinoise.
Elderflower champagne also made the top 10, highlighting how many people turned to foraging for ingredients during lockdown this summer. Top of the list of popular recipes in 2020 was a sourdough starter - the lockdown essential that went viral earlier in the year.

Reflecting Great British Chefs’ line-up of cooking talent, recipes from renowned chefs and key food influencers were popular this year, such as Michelin star chef Josh Eggleton’s potato dauphinoise, a custard tart from Masterchef: The Professionals’ Marcus Wareing, and blogger Helen Graves’ perfect egg mayo sandwich.

Great British Chefs also shared the most searched for ingredients on the website during 2020, showing what the public have been hoping to incorporate into their kitchen creations as they recreate their restaurant favourites at home, inspired by the UK’s leading chefs.
Unusual ingredients appearing in the top 100 most popular ingredient searches of the year included wild garlic, polenta, octopus and rabbit.
Despite only one of the top 10 most searched for recipes including meat, it appeared that home chefs were still carnivores at heart, with the top four most searched ingredients being chicken, lamb, salmon and duck. The term “vegetarian” came in at number five of the most popular searches.
