The parent company of Google Play Music has announced it will cease to exist as it merges with YouTube Music by the end of the year.

Announcing the news in a blog post on Tuesday August 4, parent company, Alphabet has warned Google Play Music users that they will now need to transfer their account over to YouTube Music, before December, or risk losing it altogether.

However, while Google Play Music will hold on to users’ playlists until December, the app will stop users from streaming new music in October.

The transfer process is very simple and can be achieved with one click.

Once you've completed your transfer, you can continue to use either app until December 2020 or switch over to just YouTube Music now.

To complete the transfer, simply click this link and click ‘Transfer’.

Alternatively you can simply open the YouTube Music app, select your profile picture, tap ‘Settings’ followed by ‘Transfer’ and finally ‘Transfer from Google Play Music’.

This will transfer all of your uploaded and purchased songs, your playlists and many stations, albums and songs in your library, your likes and dislikes, and your billing information for your subscription if you're a current Google Play Music subscriber.

However you might be required to create a YouTube channel if you do not currently have one, in order to transfer your playlists.

    Upgraded features

To encourage users to swap between the apps as soon as possible, YouTube Music has recently upgraded its features, developing its playlist creation functions as well as a completely new ‘explore’ tab.

Alphabet’s blog post stated, “Over the last few years, we’ve worked to build a fantastic fan experience on YouTube Music, merging the very best of Google Play Music with the very best of YouTube,”

“For users who decide not to transfer their Google Play Music account to YouTube Music, we will be sure to cancel your subscription at the end of your billing cycle so you aren’t paying for a subscription.”
