Cadbury is working on creating a milk-free Dairy Milk bar for vegans - here’s what we know so far
Cadbury’s Dairy Milk is one of the most popular chocolate bars on offer and is the go-to choice for many when picking out a sweet treat - except for those following a vegan diet.
But as vegan diets soar in popularity, the owner of Cadbury is now working on a milk-free version of its iconic bar to meet consumer demand.
A plant-based alternative
Mondelez, which also owns Tobleron and Philadelphia cream cheese, is working on bringing a plant-based alternative to the Dairy Milk bar to shelves.
The confectionery giant is understood to have been testing the new recipe for milk-free chocolate for around two years, in a bid to offer more choice to consumers.
However, Mondelez is said to have been forced to delay the launch as it tried to find a dairy alternative suitable for those with nut allergies, The Mirror reports.
The company had reportedly been planning to launch the new product in January, to tie in with Veganuary, but has since stated it has no immediate plans to bring the product to shelves.
A Mondelez spokesperson said: “We’re always listening to our consumers so we can develop and provide people with greater choice.
“This includes looking at a plant-based Cadbury Dairy Milk bar. However, we have no immediate plans to launch.
“We are only interested in launching a new vegan product that retains the texture and taste that our consumers expect and love.”
A long-standing favourite
Cadbury produced its first ever Dairy Milk bar at its factory in Birmingham in 1905, and it has remained a firm consumer favourite for more than 100 years.
The Dairy Milk bar became the brand’s best-selling product and still remains its most popular brand.
And while chocolate fans still have a wait until a vegan version lands on shelves, Cadbury recently announced it will be treating consumers to two new chocolate delights, which are set to join the much-loved Darkmilk range.
The new additions include the first ever Cadbury Darkmilk chocolate giant buttons and a Darkmilk bar with crunchy cocoa pieces.
