Police investigating the cause of a major fire in Northumberland woodland are following up reports of youths camping in the area.
Yesterday’s incident happened above the Hillside East area of Rothbury and the burning was over approximately 75 metres by 35 metres of scrub and woodland.
The area is still smouldering this morning and fire crews are in attendance, damping down hotspots.
Sergeant Graham Vickers, from the Rothbury and Coquetdale Neighbourhood Team, said: “Police inquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing, in liaison with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service. Reports of youths camping in the area are being followed up. Please be mindful of fire risks in extremely dry woodland areas.
“Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is continuing to deploy resources (fire fogging unit) to dampen down hotspots above Hillside East. Whilst smouldering is visible, there are no reports of further ignition and no risk to the public.”
