Working to reduce crime

I read with interest Mr David Brown’s letter about my role as Police and Crime Commissioner.

I recognise Mr Brown’s enthusiasm for police authorities, as he served on the Northumbria Police Authority for a number of years. However, I am sure Mr Brown welcomes the fact that I have made savings in my office of nearly £2million, compared to what the former police authority spent on similar services. This money has been put back into policing and community safety.

That said, since 2010, Northumbria Police’s budget has been cut by nearly £70million by the Government. However, the Chief Constable and I have given a commitment to protect front-line neighbourhood policing.

There is a lot of good work going on across Northumberland by the police – they are working hard to stop opportunist thieves who target farms.

Community events are arranged across the county, from the borders of Scotland, across to Kielder and down to Hexham.

I was recently in Berwick upon Tweed to meet local residents to hear what they feel the police are doing well and what could be done better and I’ve actioned the issues they raised.

I’m out and about regularly across the force area, so if there is an event any readers would like me to attend or wish to discuss a specific issue, please call my office on 0191 221 9800.
