I am writing to you because our council is failing in its legal duty towards grandparents and other relatives such as me who step in to bring up children who have experienced abuse, neglect or the death of a parent. Many feel let down and unsupported by our council in bringing up vulnerable children.
In many cases, being rail-roaded into doing so, they don’t have the access to support both emotionally and financially that official foster carers receive while doing the exact same job.
Northumberland County Council has still not published its policy on supporting these kinship carers, even though they are under a legal duty to do this.
I urge our local authority to provide these families with the support they deserve. They are doing a vital job in giving children a stable and loving home and keeping children out of care.
