A day of sorrow and pride

August 30 marked the official date of the removal of the Second Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers from the Army Order of Battle.

Their contribution to every major UK operation, as well as a notable input to UK Special Forces, is one of which all Fusiliers can be immensely proud. The thousands of veteran members of 2RRF, throughout the UK, will always uphold the memory and dedication of their fallen comrades. They will indeed be remembered.

The circumstances of this decision remain obscured, with many questions still unanswered.

Without any real explanation as to why 2RRF were substituted onto the list for disbandment, the British Army values of integrity, loyalty and respect for others are fundamentally breached by those entrusted to uphold them.

There is a dark shadow cast over the fundamentals of the military covenant with this Government. We must not compromise the Fusiliers Association by using it to take political action. It is a body that supports serving and former members of the Fusiliers.

As individuals, however, we are all free to take action and I certainly intend to do so. I will keep the Association and the wider UK service veterans community informed. Once a Fusilier, always a Fusilier!
