And they are proving rich pickings for photographers, with poppy shots making up half of our pic parade.

Top of the shots was a glorious photo of poppies and Bamburgh Castle by Jonathan Paul Bell, which attracted 473 likes.

Not far behind, with 425 likes and second place, was an Elaine Holden picture of a dolphin and her calf off Seahouses.

The poppies were back for the third-placed photo by Iris Thompson of a field of poppies near Aydon Castle, with a cut-out of a soldier standing guard. It attracted 209 likes.

Fourth place went to an eerie view of wind turbines looming out of the early-morning mist at Chatton Moor by Kevin Temple, with 121 likes.
