Yobs smash windows in Alnwick town centre

Mindless vandals have struck once again in Alnwick, with more town-centre businesses suffering damage to windows.

Several properties were targeted over the weekend and police are now checking CCTV to try to trace the culprits.

It isn’t the first time that yobs have smashed windows along Alnwick’s main shopping streets in overnight attacks.

In the latest spate, police received calls about several incidents of vandalism.

Overnight on Friday, a window was damaged at Rook Matthews Sayer, in Market Street, as well as at The Chocolate Spa, on Fenkle Street.

Also on Friday, between 5.30pm and 10pm, a window was damaged at Alnwick Post Office, in Market Street.

The Gazette has also been told that The Chocolate Spa was targeted again overnight on Saturday.

Alnwick Neighbourhood Inspector Liz Hall said that inquiries are ongoing and has appealed for information.

She said: “This was mindless vandalism and we are checking CCTV in the town centre and making inquiries to find those responsible.

“We would appeal to anyone who was in the town centre at the weekend who saw or heard anything to get in touch with officers.”

Businesses will be praying that this sort of vandalism isn’t raising its ugly head again.

It came little more than a month after police launched Operation Augusta, to fight back against criminal damage, including window damage, in the town.
