Preparation work is starting on Wagonway Road in Alnwick, ahead of resurfacing in March.
Northumberland County Council is carrying out iron works along the stretch from now until January 26 as a prelude to the complete resurfacing.
The work will include preparing drainage, gullies, grates and manhole covers along Wagonway Road, Victoria Road and up to the junction with Willowburn.
It will be carried out under two phases with pedestrian access maintained.
However, residents who live along the stretch are asked to leave vehicles outside the work area if they are needed during the day. Motorists are also asked not to park on the road during the work.
The resurfacing is set to take place between March 16 and 29, with the roads closed during the work.
Diversions will be in place along the A1068 and the B6346.
