Wooler, Camera Club

Peter Ayres is a past chairman of Wooler and District Camera Club and a well-known local photographer.

Peter has also travelled and photographed extensively abroad.

But, as he told members of his old club at their latest meeting, Glendale and Wooler keep pulling him back to scenes, places and people that rival or surpass many that he has captured from further afield.

Wooler in the floods, holes in the High Street, the old railway, Wooler people at play and remembrance all featured in a series of presentations set to music that had the audience reminiscing, laughing and pondering.

In a set entitled It’s a Wonderful World images of Glendale blended seamlessly with views in the Pyrenees.

A series of mystery photographs, which it turned out were actually taken within a quarter of a mile of Glendale Hall, had people asking: “Where is that?”

Another set from 2007, entitled Little Red Rooster, featured the men of Wooler, or The Gents of Glendale, relaxing around the town during festival week.

Only Remembered reminded the audience of the town’s history and the contribution made during two world wars.

As the chairman Mike Young said in his vote of thanks, the whole presentation was one of fine photographs that triggered many emotions and will stand as a valuable social and historical record for the future.

The next meeting of Wooler and District Camera Club will be today (Thursday), in the Glendale Hall, Cheviot Street, Wooler, at 7.30pm, when there will be a competition evening. All are welcome.
