Winter maintenance work carried out at Lindisfarne Castle
Lindisfarne Castle may be closed for the winter, but work is being carried out to get it ready for 2020.
Builders have been levelling off the area around the bridge on the wagonway.
“The bridge was becoming inaccessible as both ends had acquired a step - mainly through erosion and visitor footfall - so these are now being levelled off,” explains house steward Nick Lewis in the Island’s December newsletter.
A small depression at the entrance to the lime kilns which was also prone to water-logging, again caused by footfall, has also been repaired.
The pumphouse roof tiles are also being fixed down to ensure they can cope with high winds.Inside, he reveals that work is progressing with the traditional deep clean and planning for next season which includes more interactive audio/visual displays and plenty more stories from the castle's history.
