Majestic Wine will NOT be opening a store in Alnwick, the Gazette can exclusively reveal.

Rumour has been rife on social media over the last few weeks, with speculation that the company had put its planned South Road store on hold.

And on Tuesday – following repeated attempts by the Gazette to clarify the situation with the business – a spokeswoman finally confirmed that the specialist wine retailer has called time on the site.

She said: “A decision has now been reached and I can confirm that we will not be opening a Majestic Wine store in Alnwick.”

In June, the company’s shares fell by more than four per cent after the retailer posted a drop in profits. The Gazette asked the spokeswoman if this had anything to do with the decision to pull out of the site, but she said she couldn’t comment.

The South Road site is owned by Northumberland Estates. On Tuesday morning, Colin Barnes, from the Estates, told the Gazette that Majestic Wine’s surveyor had been out and inspected the property on their behalf last week and the Estates had heard nothing to say that the company was pulling out.

After we found out on Tuesday afternoon about Majestic Wine’s decision to scrap its plans for Alnwick, the Gazette tried to contact the Estates for an updated comment, but did not receive one by the time of going to press.

The neighbouring Aldi store is due to open on the site on Thursday, September 3.
