Wind gusts of up to 70mph 'likely' in the North East

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind for the North East of England, with gusts of up to 60 to 70mph likely.

The warning (which means be aware) came into force at 9am today and is valid until the same time tomorrow. The Met Office is urging people to be aware of the risk of disruption to transport, as well as to power supplies.

The Met Office website states: 'Southwesterly gales will begin to develop widely across northern parts of the UK during Monday, increasing further to bring locally severe gales and storm-force westerly winds by Monday night before easing on Tuesday morning. Gusts of 60 to 70mph are likely quite widely. Much of Scotland is covered by an associated amber wind warning, where winds will be stronger still and there is a risk of higher levels of disruption. Please be aware of the risk of disruption to transport as well as power supplies, with some structural damage also possible.'

At 8am today, gusts of 56mph were recorded at Boulmer.
