White-lines worries raised

Concerns were raised about the lack of white lines on one of Seahouses' key streets with calls from some parish councillors for them to be reinstated as soon as possible.

Earlier this year, the B1340 was resurfaced from Beadnell to the roundabout where King Street meets Main Street in Seahouses.

Before the white lines were repainted, members of North Sunderland Parish Council agreed to try something different in a bid to tackle speeding on the southern entrance to the village.

Following a suggestion by county councillor John Woodman, at the June meeting, a majority of councillors voted to back a six-month trial of no central white line plus advisory cycle lanes on the stretch.

The idea is that it forces motorists to drive more cautiously.

But at Monday’s meeting, Coun David Fordy reported complaints after a near-miss on King Street in misty conditions.

And Coun David Shiel added that the residents want the white lines back in the middle of the road.

Other members pointed out that the six-month trial was ongoing, although Coun Mick McCarthy did highlight that the trial was meant to include the advisory cycle lanes.
