PLUMMETING temperatures, snow, sleet and rain – this week’s weather has been a far cry from the basking sunshine and highs of 26 degrees last week.
The Met Office reported lows of 1 degree on Tuesday as snow fell across north Northumberland with blizzard-like conditions and settling in some areas.
Yesterday the snow was gone, but its effects were still being felt.
Around 10,000 homes across Northumberland and Cumbria were without power according to Northern Powergrid. A spokesman said the combination of strong winds and ice and snow on overhead lines caused the disruption.
Howick Hall and Gardens and Lindisfarne Castle were closed on Tuesday because of the weather.
And Amble’s all-weather lifeboat was launched at 1pm to supervise the return of fishing vessel Aquarius, which battled the elements as the weather took a turn for the worse.
Easter weekend is set to see light showers and overcast days with highs of eight degrees.
