The majority of the North East is set to be hit by the heavy wind including Sunderland, South Shields, Hartlepool and across Northumberland.

The wind speeds are expected to hit highs of 28 mph and are predicted to be at their highest throughout the afternoon. Lows of 14 mph are forecast for throughout the evening.

Wind gust is forecast to hit as high as 50mph at mid-afternoon.

The travel disruption may also affect rail, air and ferry transport.

Some showers are forecast for throughout the day which may add to journey times taking longer. This is likely to be made worse by spray and surface water which could lay on roads.

Delays for high-sided vehicles are likely on exposed roads such as the A19 and local bridges.

Some short term loss of power may also affect our area.

This is what the Met Office advises.

When gusts of wind hit you should grip your steering wheel firmly with both hands especially when overtaking.

Drivers are advised to keep an eye out for gaps between trees, buildings or bridges over a river or railway as these are said to be places that are more likely to be exposed to side wind.

The Met Office also advises drivers to keep enough room on either side of the vehicle to allow for being blow sideways.

The Met Office forecast for Tuesday, December 10 said: “Very windy, with persistent and often heavy rain, especially across the hills. A squally and heavy band of rain moving east during the late afternoon. Clearer spells and showers following. Maximum temperature 13 °C.”
