Yellow weather warning issued ahead of downpour - this is when to expect the rain

Its forecasters say we should expect “a spell of heavy rain” which could cause surface water flooding and impact on travel from 4pm today, Thursday, June 11, until 2pm tomorrow.

Areas affected include Sunderland, South Tyneside, County Durham and Hartlepool, as well as Gateshead, the south of Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Stockton, Middlesbrough, Redcar and areas of North Yorkshire.

It says rain will become heavy and persistent during this evening, overnight and into tomorrow morning, with some spells expected.

But even after the warning has passed, the Met Office has said the region will still continue to see rain showers until around 6pm or 7pm tomorrow, when mist and fog is expected to fall across large areas of the North East.

The Met Office forecast for the weekend suggests the wet weather will continue into Saturday and Sunday, with a mix of rain, drizzle and sunny periods expected, with it drying out towards the south of the region.

Meanwhile, the BBC's team expects thundery showers across the area on Saturday, while it says Hartlepool can expect light cloud and a breeze during Sunday.

It predicts 30 mm to 40 mm of rain is likely with spots of 50 mm to 70 mm in places, with the greater downpour expected on the higher ground further south in the region.

The forecast sets out that showers will grow heavier from 3pm, with the chance of rain between 90% and 95%

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater with homes and businesses flooded, causing damage to some buildings

“There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

“Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer and there there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services as well as road closures.

“There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.”
