With just one more week to wait until the big day, people’s thoughts are turning to whether or not December 25 will bring a white Christmas.

Many dream of an idyllic Christmas Day, with the ground blanketed in crisp snow. It’s pretty but not always practical.

According to Will I Get A White Christmas there is currently a ZERO per cent chance of snow in Northumberland, with our Christmas Day weather expected to be sunny, with temperatures around 10°C.

How likely is a white Christmas?

According to the Met Office, forecasters can accurately predict if snow is likely on any given Christmas Day up to five days beforehand.

Statistics show that a snowflake has fallen somewhere in the UK on Christmas Day 38 times in the last 54 years, so we can probably expect more than half of all December 25s to be a “white Christmas”.

But – there has only been a widespread covering of snow on the ground four times in the last 51 years.

This is when more than 40% of weather stations in the UK reported snow on the ground at 9am.

When was the last white Christmas?

The Met Office says that the UK's last widespread white Christmas in the UK was in 2010.

Figures show there was snow on the ground at 83% of stations, but added that snow or sleet also fell at 19% of stations.

Ten per cent of weather stations recording snow falling in 2015, but none reported any snow lying on the ground.
