Northumberland was also lashed with rain, sleet and snow, and the wild weather is expected to continue until at least Monday. The strongest winds, with gusts of up to 98mph, were recorded at Brizlee Wood.
LNER have advised customers not to travel north of York today or tomorrow, saying they are unable to transport passengers between Newcastle and Edinburgh due to significant damage to the rail network.
