Red flood warning on the River Tweed as Storm Dennis hits Northumberland

The red warning was issued at Norham, near Berwick at 11.43am on Sunday, February 16 as water levels remain high on the River Tweed.

The warning, which means flooding is expected and immediate action should be taken, comes after heavy rainfall overnight when Storm Dennis hit.

The Environment Agency has said that river levels are now beginning to fall but are still above the property flooding threshold.

Areas most at risk are properties and low lying land around the Boat House and the Boat House Cottage.

Residents are urged to avoid low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers.

Amber flood alerts are also in place in the Carham, Wark, Coldstream, West Leymouth and Tillmouth Park areas along the south bank of the river.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across the region this weekend and into next week, with Alnwick expected to feel gusts of up to 53mph later today.

The latest warning came into force on Sunday, February 16 at 10am and is due to be in place until 12pm on Monday, February 17 with some disruption to roads and public transport expected.

LNER trains are operating a reduced service due to speed restrictions across the network.

A number of flood alerts are in place elsewhere in the region urging people to be prepared, including at the lower River Wear in Durham and Chester-le-Street.

River levels remain high in Durham City Centre.

Other areas in the UK are feeling the full force of Storm Dennis, with more than 300 flood warnings issued across the country.

There are four severe flood warnings in place in England - meaning there is danger to life - on the River Teme at Ludlow, Eardiston, Little Hereford and Ashford Carbonel and Tenbury Wells and Burford.

Two severe flood warnings are in place in Wales, where a major incident has been declared, on the River Taff at Pontypridd and River Neath at Aberdulais.
