The Met Office has said it will be bright and dry with patchy low cloud on during the day, following on from a night where the temperature dropped to 0C with a risk of frost across the region.

It will remain breezy over the western hills, with occasional hill fog.

The sun is expected to shine from 10am onwards, with the temperature likey to be around 5C.

What about later today?

It will be generally cloudier overnight, but chilly with clear spells in the south.

The maximum temperature is expected to be around 7C, with the sunshine to fade away by around 2pm.

What will the weather be like this heading into Wednesday?

It will be bright, perhaps sunny initially on Wednesday, from around 9am to noon, but becoming cloudy with patchy rain later.

The temperature could rise to 8C, with the lowest suggested to be 6C.

It will be windy, increasingly cloudy on Thursday, with locally heavy rain.

The experts say it will remain windy on Friday, with sunshine and showers.

What is the long-term forecast for the North East?

On Saturday morning there may be a return to widespread frost for many parts of the UK, though it will likely turn much milder by the end of the day.

There may be a few showers in the northeast, which should clear quickly to leave a mostly dry day everywhere.

Overnight, strong winds and rain should approach from the west. Into the next week, the more changeable theme is likely to persist with spells of more organised cloud, rain and stronger winds followed by some brighter, showery and colder interludes.

The heaviest rainfall is likely across the northwest with snow over northern hills, possibly to lower levels at times.

Temperatures are likely to remain at or slightly below normal with occasional milder interludes, mainly in the south.
