What can we expect during the yellow weather warning for ice?

The Met Office put it in place from 8pm yesterday until 10am today, covering areas including Northumberland, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Hartlepool and County Durham and as far south as North Yorkshire and Humberside.

It urged people to take care, with a risk of injury from slips and falls on icy surfaces, while it said there would be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Following rain on Sunday afternoon surfaces are expected to remain wet into the evening when temperatures will start to fall.

“With surface temperatures falling below freezing some icy stretches are likely to form, mainly on rural routes and untreated surfaces.

“Some further rain overnight may bring an increased risk of icy stretches for Monday morning.”

What can we expect from the weather as the morning progresses?

The Met Office has said the day will be “noticeably cold” with sunshine and showers, which could fall as snow across higher ground in the region.

There will be cloud and sun from between 11am and noon, with a chance of rain earlier on at this stage in the day, followed by sun until around 4pm.

The temperature will be between 3C and 7C.

What will it be like after sunset?

The evening is expected to be cloudy, with the chance of showers at around 11pm in the north of the region.

The temperature will be around 3C or 4C.

What about later on in the week?

The outlook for Tuesday through to Thursday is that it will stay cold during Tuesday with sunshine and further rain or snow showers.

It will turn cloudier and milder for Wednesday and Thursday with some rain and drizzle. Some hill snow during Wednesday.
