North East braced for snow and ice as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning

The warning is set to be in force from the evening of Sunday, December 27, and last until Tuesday, December 29 as the region braces for a cold snap.

Forecasters are predicting that temperatures will be no higher than 5°c and could drop to -3°c while the weather warning is in place.

It appears that Sunday night will set to be the worst hit should it snow, with conditions set to improve throughout Monday and into Tuesday.

Met Office forecasters say: “An area of rain, sleet and snow will move south through Sunday night with the potential for icy surfaces and some travel disruption.

“Snow expected across hills, but perhaps to lower levels at times. Breezy initially but winds falling light later. Maximum temperature 4°C.

“Patchy cloud and frosty conditions developing elsewhere by the end of the night. Cold. Minimum temperature -3 °C.

“As winds turn northeasterly, wintry showers will likely arrive from the North Sea, perhaps accompanied by hail and thunder. Maximum temperature 3 °C."

The Met Office have released a list of things that members of the public should expect, including disruption to roads and railways with the chance of longer journey times, icy patches on untreated roads and pavements with the possibility of some injuries from falls on icy surfaces.

As the region heads towards the middle of the week, temperatures are expected to improve slightly, with sunny spells forecast and the likelihood of wintry showers reduced.
