Met Office issues a yellow weather warning for ice as the cold snap in the North East continues

The yellow weather warning for ice will be in place from 6pm on Sunday, January 3, and last until 11am on Monday, January 4, as temperatures are expected to plummet over night.

It is the third cold weather warning issued to the North East in the space of a week as parts of the region continue experience wintry showers.

In a tweet, the Met Office said: “Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has been melting on Sunday and where frequent showers occur through the night.”

There were also warnings of injuries caused by slips and falls on icy surfaces as temperatures drop.

According to forecasters, the region will see scattered wintry showers overnight, with occasional clear spells, meaning that frost and ice are expected to form and temperatures are set to drop to around -1°C.

As we head into tomorrow, Monday, January 4, forecasters are predicting sunny spells alongside wintry showers which are set to be more frequent in the morning.

It is expected to become drier throughout the day but will still breezy and cooler at the coast with temperatures reaching highs of 5°C.

The outlook for Tuesday to Thursday looks set to be more of the same with sunny periods and the occasional wintry shower.

Forecasters are predicting that it could get cloudier on Thursday, with some rain and sleet forecast.
