Met Office issues first snow warning of the winter for North of England

The Met Office has issued its first weather warning of the winter for snow.

A yellow alert is in place for all of Northern England and much of Scotland from now until 9am on Saturday, December 5.

The warning covers North East England, North West England, South West Scotland, Lothian and the Borders and Yorkshire & Humberside.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care and commuters to allow more time for their journeys, with snowfalls especially likely over higher ground.

The warning says: “Snow is likely to bring a brief period of travel disruption to parts of Scotland and Northern England early on Friday.

“There is a chance of travel delays on higher routes with some stranded vehicles and passengers.

“Increased chance of traffic collisions due to difficult driving conditions.”

The Met Office says both roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.
